St Mary Magdalene Meditating
Georges de La Tour
1636-8
I recently saw this at the LACMA
and I fell instantly in love.
I normally don't like this style of painting,
too dark and oppressive,
too heavy and forbidding...
But I love this.
I love the juxtaposition of the candlelight and shadows.
It makes me feel as reflective as the subject
and there is an innocence among all the darkness
that I find enlightening.
I found it truly captivating.
What do you think?

She looks like someone who has something weighing very heavy on their mind.
